Research Group Leader
Led by Dr. Damien Faivre, the Living Materials Research Group at the University of Latvia explores the intersection of microbiology, materials science and engineering. By bringing microorganisms into physical research and engineering, the group seeks new scientific insights and innovative approaches to living materials.
Dr. Damien Faivre, connects questions that are usually studied separately:
- how living organisms build minerals,
- how magnetic materials can be made sustainably,
- and how tiny swimmers move and perform functions.
His path has crossed Earth sciences at IPGP in France, materials chemistry at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, bioscience and biotechnology at CEA Cadarache, and physics at the University of Latvia - bringing methods and ideas from each field into the next.
Living Materials Research Group, established in March 2025, has quickly grown into a dynamic team of 15 researchers.
